Kokrajhar — Protest wave continued in Assam against BJP leader and Member of Parliament Dr Subramaniam Swami’s remarks mixing religion and politics while visiting Assam.

The Kokrajhar district committee of All Assam Minority Students Union (AAMSU) and All Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) Minority Students Union (ABMSU) protested and burnt effigy of Dr Swami, 15 March.

Hundreds of AAMSU and ABMSU activists and publics with banner, placards took out a rally and hit the street shouting slogans on Sunday at Fakiragram along the Bilasipara-Serfanguri and Bhotgaon along JD Road in protest against remarks of Swami.

They later burnt effigy of Swami and demanded banning of BJP leader Swami’s visit to Assam. Swami has allegedly been trying to create communal clash in the state in the name of politics.

Rafikul Islam, AAMSU leader strongly reacted Swami’s remarks on religion as India represents secular in its status.

He said that BJP leader Swami was trying to create to communal resentment in the state, for which is why he is making irrelevant remarks.

He said that the (AAMSU) would not allow Swami to make any communal comments. The AAMSU further asked the government not to allow the BJP leader to visit the state and his stepping to Assam should be banned.

The controversy started while attending a function on Friday 13 March when the noted Supreme Court lawyer said that” a mosque is not a religious place, but just a building and can be demolished any time.”

Swamy also challenged to debate any person who disagreed with his views.

Number of protests broke out after Swamy’s remark and a criminal case was filed against him by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS).

The KMSS accused the BJP leader of spreading communal disturbance ahead of Assam Assembly Elections.

KMSS president Akhil Gogoi condemned Swamy’s statement and asked the state government to ban the entry of the BJP leader into the state.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi also condemned Swamy’s statement on mosques.

The Nazira unit of All Assam Minority Students’ Union took out a huge rally on Saturday in protest against Dr Subramaniam Swamy’s visit to the state.
