Lucknow: Police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested the family members of a 19-year-old girl whose body was found with throat slit.

Police suspect it to be another case of honor killing.

The girl was a native of Pratapgarh district but her body was found in an open field in neighboring Jaunpur district on June 12.

The arrested included her parents, two brothers and two sisters.

The police said the family had fixed the girl’s marriage but she refused to snap ties with a youth she was having an affair. The family then decided to kill her.

Claiming that all the six arrested members have confessed to the crime, Sujanganj Station Officer K K Mishra said the girl’s elder brother slit her throat with a sharp-edged weapon while others caught hold of her. After she died, they carried her body to the Jaunpur district and dumped it in an open field.

The police have also arrested the Jaunpur resident with whom the girl was having an affair. The youth, a Dalit, works as a tailor.

The girl’s father works in Allahabad while both his sons are daily-wage laborers, indianexpress.com reported.

On June 11 night, the girl’s mother and two sisters took her to an isolated place on the pretext of meeting someone where her father and the two brothers were already present.

The elder brother then slit her throat. The body was discovered by villagers next morning who then informed the police.

The elder brother later visited the spot and identified the body, and then filed a First Information Report against two unidentified persons for killing his sister.

Superintendent of Police, Jaunpur, Bharat Singh said investigations revealed that on June 11, a few hours before the murder, the youth had met the victim and threatened that he would commit suicide if she did not call off her marriage that her family had fixed for her.

The police said that when she returned home after convincing the youth “not to take any extreme step,” a heated argument took place between her and the family members, following which the family decided to kill her.

All seven persons were produced before the court which has sent them to judicial custody.
