Kochi: Four women and two children were among eight people who drowned when a boat capsized off Fort Kochi on Wednesday.

The boat carrying 45 passengers was on its way to Vypeen, a suburb of Kochi, the commercial capital of Kerala state.

The accident occurred after the boat collided with a fishing boat around 1:45 pm. The boat split into two in the impact of the collision, reports manoramanonline.com.

Around 30 passengers have been rescued and shifted to Fort Kochi Taluk Hospital and Ernakulam Medical Trust Hospital.

The accident occurred some 100 meters away from the Fort Kochi jetty.

Since the boat capsized close to the shore, many could swim to safety.
