Amritsar: A minister in Punjab, a northern Indian state, unfurled the national flag upside down at an Independence Day function on Saturday.

The administration has suspended two police personnel responsible for the flag hoisting arrangement, the Press Trust of India reported

The goof-up was noticed and corrected only toward the end of the function at Guru Nanak Auditorium in Amritsar, the holiest city of Sikhism.

State Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majitiha, who presided over an Independence Day ceremony, unfurled and saluted the wrongly displayed flag in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat and Commissioner Amritsar Police Jatinder Singh Aulakh.

Majithia delivered his speech with the flag flying upside down.
