Meerut: In yet another anti-woman incident, some unruly young men have thrashed a soldier to death for opposing their attempt to harass a girl in a northern Indian town.

The incident took place on Thursday at Hardevnagar in the Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh. Vedmitra Chaudhury, 35, a Lance Naik in 416 Engineering Brigade, saw some men teasing the daughter of the owner of a milk booth on Rohta Road.

The soldier protested and even beat one of the miscreants named Akash, police said.

Enraged, Akash reportedly called his friends, who arrived armed with sticks, and allegedly assaulted the army man, leaving him seriously injured.

The soldier, who was staying with his wife and children, was admitted to an Army Hospital in the area, where he succumbed to his injuries Friday night, police said.

Police have arrested Akash and his friends, Sanju and Ritesh, and launched a search for others involved in the crime, Senior Superintendent of Police Dinesh Chandra Dubey told media.

An army officer said Chaudhury fulfilled the duty of an Indian citizen and protected a girl’s honor. He will be remembered as a martyr, Sub-Area Colonel Rajiv Kumar added.
