New Delhi: The government on Wednesday said that two Indian nationals have been kidnapped from Sirte in war-torn Libya.

The latest incident comes even as two Indians, who were working in a university in Sirte, remain in the captivity after being abducted by Islamic militants in July.

“Our mission in Tripoli is making further inquiry for confirmation of the incident. The matter has been taken up at diplomatic level,” said ministry of external affairs spokesman Vikas Swarup.

“All efforts are being made to ensure well being and secure early release of our nationals,” he said.

The two abducted nationals have been identified as Pravash Ranjan Samal from Odisha and Ramamurthy Kosanam from Andhra Pradesh.

In July, four Indian teachers were kidnapped in Libya, allegedly by terror group Islamic State (IS).

Two of them, Laxmikant and Vijay Kumar, were later released.

All four men were employed with the University of Sirte and were on their way to India when they were detained by alleged IS men at a checkpoint 50 km from Sirte, the hometown of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

Sirte is under the control of the Islamic State terror group, which is steadily expanding its influence in central Libya.
