Guwahati – Since last two years a university in northeast India has been promoting research in nano-technology in the region both among researchers and students.

Affectionately called nano-man of northeast, Dr Sunandan Baruah has organized two national week-long workshops, and set up two nano-technology labs fitted with equipments manufactured indigenously, and has also tied up with Tezpur University to utilize their sophisticated nano-labs.

The nano research scientist Dr Baruah head of department of Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) at Assam Don Bosco University (ADBU) School of Technology Department (ECE) organized “amazingNANO-2016”, a week-long national workshop on Nanotechnology at ADBU Azara campus, 1-6 February.

The Vice Chancellor of ADBU, Dr Stephen Mavely while giving out certificates in the valedictory function on 6 February said, “this workshop is one of its kind in the North East and I hope that the region excel in research in nanotechnology.” He also complimented the efforts of ECE department in promoting nano-technology study and research in northeast India.

The Convener of the workshop Dr. Baruah said, “the workshop provided a unique platform to the young and enthusiastic researchers especially from the northeastern part of India, to get initiated into the latest technology expanding around the world through natural analogies, theoretical concepts, practical sessions and logical analysis.”Known as the nano man of northeast India specialized in Nanotechnology, Nanoelectronics and Embedded Systems, Dr Baruah emphasized the fact that through the workshop the participants covered the basics of nano-technology which is not in the curriculum of most colleges in northeast India and will further help them explore and move into nano applications.

The Director of Institute of Advance Study in Science and Technology (IASST) Guwahati Prof N.C. Talukdar was the keynote speaker at the inaugural session which had over 50 participants.

Besides ADBU scholars and faculty members, there are 25 participants, both students and research scholars, from Northeastern Hill University Shillong and Gauhati University.

After a motivational talk by ADBU registrar Dr Basil Koikara, the director of the School of Technology Prof Manoranjan Kalita declared the “amazingNANO-2016” opened.

The participants interacted with research persons who are renowned in different areas of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology including Dr. P. Deb, Dr. G. Ahmed, Dr. S. Das from Tezpur University, Prof. Utpal Bora from IIT Guwahati, and Prof. Pranayee Dutta from Gauhati University.

Four Skype sessions offered lectures from nano experts from overseas research centres namely Prof. Louis Hornyak from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Dr. Hassan Jafri from Uppsala University, Sweden, Prof. Achintya Bezbaruah from North Dakota State University, USA and Dr. Pankaj Thakuria from Forschungszentrum Jülich, Germany.

The workshop supported by Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata has two study trips planned. A half-day study trip to IIT Guwahati and IASST Guwahati on 4th February will be followed by day trip to Tezpur University to study the high-tech nano labs, 5th February.
