New Delhi: Two Indian students were killed and another sustained injuries in a stabbing incident in Ukraine, an Eastern European nation.

Pranav Shaindilya and Ankur Singh, who died in the April 10 attack, and the wounded Indrajeet Singh Chauhan were students of a medical college. Indrajeet is recuperating in a hospital.

The suspects are three Ukranian nationals.

All three victims were from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

Pranav was from Muzaffarnagar, Ankur from Ghaziabad while Indrajeet hailed from Agra.

“In an unfortunate event, three Indian students in Uzhgorod Medical College (Ukraine) were stabbed by three Ukrainian nationals at around 3am in the morning of Sunday, April 10,” India’s External Afairs Ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup told reporters on Monday.

Shaindilya was a third year student while Singh was a fourth year student at the college.

Swarup also said the police apprehended the Ukrainians based on the information given by Indrajeet. The three were trying to cross the Ukrainian border when they were arrested. The police have also recovered the passports and documents of the Indian victims and blood-stained knife.

The spokesperson said the Indian embassy in Kiev was informed of the incident around 11 am on Sunday and it has tried to ascertain the facts from the police, the university authorities and other local contacts.

“The embassy has spoken to the families of the two deceased students. All necessary actions are being taken to complete the formalities for sending the two bodies to India. The Embassy is also taking up the matter related to safety of Indian students strongly with the Foreign Office of Ukraine,” said Swarup.
