Former IPS officer and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kiran Bedi has been appointed as new Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry. Kiran Bedi,  who represented BJP as a chief ministerial candidate in 2015 Delhi assembly elections will replace the Lt Governor A K Singh who is holding the post for the last two years.

The 66-year-old Bedi will be the 24th Lt Governor of the Union Territory, was appointed by President Pranab Mukherjee. Bedi, a retired Indian Police Service officer, has been appointed today , almost a year after she and her party (BJP) suffered humiliating defeat in Delhi, against Aam Aadmi Party in 2015.

Bedi while talking to a news channel said, “I will take this as a challenge. I have always loved to serve the people and I am delighted to serve again”.

The decision of her appointment was taken by the top most authority in BJP. Kiran came closer to the BJP in 1995, after she set good terms with the BJP Delhi CM Madan Lal Khurana when he was imprisoned in Tihar jail.

However Bedi, was recognised by the BJP after she publicly supported Narendra Modi during 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Bedi was projected as a Delhi’s Chief Ministerial candidate against Arvind Kejriwal. However she lost the election from Krishna Nagar constituency against AAP candidate SK Bagga with a humiliating vote margin of 2277 votes. Since the lost, Bedi has been living an isolated political life and never appeared in any political rally of BJP in recent elections.

Bedi, the first woman to join the Indian Police Service in 1972, remained in the service for 35 years before taking voluntary retirement in 2007.
After joining IPS, Bedi served in Delhi, Goa, Chandigarh and Mizoram, she also won President’s Police Medal in 1979. She is the first Indian woman who has been appointed as Police Advisor to Secretary-General of the United Nations.

The Union Territory where assembly elections were held last week will now see a new Governor in the state. The Congress party who won 15 seats and its ally against DMK will form the government.
