Mount Everest

Mount Everest, located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal and Tibet, is the highest mountain on the planet. Its peak is 8,848 metres above sea level. In 1856, the Great Trigonometric Survey of India established the first published height of Everest, at 8,840 m In 1865, Everest got its official English name. It was named by the Royal Geographical Society on a recommendation by the British Surveyor General of India Andrew Waugh. Kangchenjunga is the second highest peak of the Himalayas after Everest.

Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain in the world, stretching across parts of Nepal, Sikkim and India. At an elevation of 8,586 metres, it is called Five Treasures of Snow after its five high peaks. It is worshipped by the people of Darjeeling and Sikkim. Until 1852, Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world. The Nameri National Park is the closest national park, located at the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in the neighbouring state of Assam.

Nameri National Park

Nameri is a national park situated in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas in the Sonitpur district of Assam. The park was declared a reserve forest on October 17, 1978. Until then, it was was used a lot for logging. It shares its northern boundary with the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh, also known as the Pakke Tiger Reserve.

Pakke Tiger Reserve

A Project Tiger Reserve, Pakke is situated in East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. The 862 square kilometres reserve is protected by the Department of Environment and Forests of Arunchal Pradesh. The habitat types are broadly lowland semi-evergreen, evergreen forest and Eastern Himalayan broadleaf forest. The general vegetation type of the entire reserve is classified as Assam Valley tropical semi-evergreen forest. Three large cats — tiger, leopard and clouded leopard, share space with the wild dog and Asiatic jackal.
