Shillong: When there is a will, there is a way – this saying fits in perfectly with the life of a 50 year old mother of 8 children and one grandchild and teacher of Sacred Heart’s Higher Secondary School, Shillong Amavilis Susngi resident of Mawlai Nongpdeng, who after a gap of 31 years decided to pursue her graduation till she finally achieved what she had hoped for.

Amavilis Susngi, a teacher of a Sacred Heart’s School in Mawlai never thought of achieving this milestone at a very mature age amidst a bag load of responsibility. After a gap of almost 31 years, Susngi took this brave decision to pursue her studies and to simultaneously complete it.

Her journey started way back in 2014, when she realised that the importance of becoming a graduate will not only boost her morale but it will also fulfil what she had desired for so long. According to Susngi, she had to drop out of college in the year 1980 after she got married.

She maintained that it was her personal choice to put a stop to her studies as her first priority was her children. She said that as a mother, she has many responsibilities for her children but despite all that, it was always her desire to be a graduate.

“Nobody forced to quit my studies but it was personal choice as my first priority is my children and my family comes first,” Susngi said.

Later when her children are all grown up, she felt that the time was right for her to pick up from where she left long time back. Her age did not act as a deterrent as even at the age of 50 years old, she still feel that it is never too old to learn and studies. The same thrive and desire to learn was then followed by evening classes at Savio evening School and College, the busy and important hours that she spent for almost 3 years since 2014. She appeared for the final year BA examination this year as a private candidate and finally came out with flying colours.

“Ever since I decided to pursue my studies, I agree that there are many challenges during the course of my studies because as a mother, I am bound by duties and responsibilities towards my family. I had to stay up late to complete my work in as far as my studies is concerned,” the teacher said.

Notwithstanding the age factor, Susngi continued without hesitation, a` knowledge-filled journey which culminated into a interesting experience, a bright destination and achievement of which she had never expected to grasp.

When asked about her source of encouragement, Susngi said that the equal support and encouragement of her children and her relatives gave her the much needed inspiration to resume her studies. She maintained that nothing is impossible if you have the will to do it.

She also expressed her gratitude to her former and present principals for their continuous support and encouragement and her teachers of the Savio Evening School and College for their selfless act and their dedication.

Susngi’s journey poses as a perfect example for others to emulate. It all rests upon one single sentence and that is — It is never too late to learn and one is never too old to learn.
