Bengaluru: Over 10 million in new currency is missing after the driver of a van carrying cash to an ATM in Bengaluru allegedly drove away on Wednesday.
Officials are hoping that the serial numbers on the new notes will help track down the missing money.
There was Rs. 13,700,000 in the Tata Sumo, in 100 and 2,000-rupee notes, when it was driven away from the city’s busy Kempe Gowda Road.
The driver, hired on contract, was with three others in the van. He allegedly went missing when the others went inside the Bank of India to collect more cash.
The bank’s zonal manager, Eshwarappa, said the company Logitech was responsible for collecting cash from different branches.
The driver has still not been found.
More robberies have been reported after the notes ban on November 8, which meant that the two largest currency notes, forming 85 per cent of the cash in circulation, were suddenly worthless.
At least Rs. 11,500,000 was stolen from a bank in Odisha on the weekend, all in banned Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes. Two robberies lso reported in Kashmir.
