Kottayam: The members of the CPM in Kottayam district to post 50,000 letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the government intervention to release the abducted Malayali priest Fr Tom Uzhunnalil.

According to CPM district secretary VN Vasavan, these letters will be posted from the 404 post offices in the district on January 2. The campaign will be launched at the district head post office in Kottayam at 10am on that day. A protest meeting will be held at the Old Police Station Ground at 4pm which will be inaugurated by LDF Convener Vaikom Vishwan.

The priest who hails from Ramapuram in Kottayam District was abducted in March this year suspected to be by terror group Islamic State which attacked an old-age home run by Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity in southern Yemeni city of Aden.

The priest was seen begging for life in a video uploaded in social media on Monday, a day after Christmas. The priest appears very weak and at times was gasping for breath in the 5.06 minutes video. In the video, he is seen appealing to the Pope Francis, Indian government as well as other governments in the world to secure his release from his captors.
