Kochi, Kerala: Syro-Malabar Church head Cardinal George Alencherry said that the church is looking into being more proactive in the protection of the differently-abled of society.

He was speaking at  a family meet  for differently abled organised by Love and Care – a charity based in Mother Theresa Nagar in Palarivattom , Kochi.

Cardinal Alencherry said that he envisaged a system where the needy of the society could live and work together, irrespective of their religion. He stressed that the society had a moral responsibility to care for and serve the weaker sections of the society. For this the bishop invited the support of the wider community.

Without adequate support, many of the vulnerable people of the society such as the blind, deaf and mute,  widows, bedridden patients, transgenders , physically and mentally handicapped  and their carers would be  forced to lead a very  lonely life, the bishop added.

A childrens cultural program added colour to the event. Cardinal Alencherry distributed gifts for the families. Representatives of carers and social workers shared their experiences of working with differently abled people.

A memorandum detailing the issues and their proposed solutions drafted by  Prof N R Menon, president of Sai Samanvaya was handed over to Cardinal Alencherry during the meeting.
