Auckland, New Zealand: Man Kaur, a 101-year-old athlete from India, won the 100 metres sprint at the World Masters Games in Auckland on Monday, celebrating with a little dance.

Ms Kaur completed the race in one minute 14 seconds and was the only athlete to compete in her age category.

She has been dubbed the “miracle from Chandigarh” in New Zealand’s media.

“I enjoyed it and am very, very happy,” she told reporters after the race. “I’m going to run again, I’m not going to give up. I will participate, there’s no full stop.”

Kaur started running track eight years ago when her son Gurdev Singh, 78, encouraged her to join him to compete in the Games.

“When she wins, she goes back to India, and she’s excited to tell others, ‘I have won so many medals from this country,’ Winning makes her happy,” he told the Canadian Press last year.

In order to train for the Games, Kaur runs several short distances at night, and she hopes that other women will follow her example.

“She encourages them,  that they should run, they should not eat wrong foods, and they should encourage their children also to take part in the Games,” said Gurdev.
