Kolkata — Caritas India will train 742 volunteers in 12 states to combat disasters.

All most every year India witnesses some disasters occurs in different parts of the country and in the world as well. Tsunami happened in Tamil Nadu in 2004, in 2009 Bengal witnessed Aila in the district of South 24 Parganas.

Disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society when outside help is needed to support the affected community or society.

Caritas India, the social wing of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI), has been awarded with European Union Aid Volunteer Initiative project called as PEACH in collaboration with European-Asian Partnership for building capacities in humanitarian action.

The objective of the project is to strengthen organizational and technical competencies of Caritas organizations in working for community resilience and preventing human, economic and environmental losses during disaster.

On the first phase Caritas India will train 742 volunteers from 34 partners of 76 districts under 12 states to support the partner organization in strengthening capacities at strategic and operational level in humanitarian action so to strengthen the partner organization in the field of volunteer management in emergency situation in the line with European standard.

In view of the above, Sudip Sardar and Pralay Bayen from Palli Unnayan Samiti or PUS, (social service wing of) Baruipur diocese had taken part in the PEACH training from February 20 to February 24, 2017 held at Krishnagar Cathedral Charitable Society as to be the volunteers during disaster.

They will also act as the trainers of volunteers at local level. Caritas India had also organized an orientation on PEACH for the directors of Caritas India’s Partner Organizations for the successful result of the project.

Fr. Parimal Kanji, director of PUS Baruipur had participated in the PEACH training held from 19-20 April at Navjivan Renewal Centre, Delhi.
