Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has opened the northeastern Indian state’s first cybercrime police station to effectively deal with increasing cases of cases involving social media.

“It is imperative to focus on this aspect (misuse of cyber space). Crime against women and children are increasing due to spread of social media and better internet connectivity clearly indicating the trend of crimes in recent times. As such police department has to gear up to face the emerging challenges,” Singh said on June 23 after opening the police station.

According to nagalandpost.com, Manipur has witnessed a sharp rise in cybercrimes with the increasing use of information technology and social media to propagate ideologies inimical to the state’s interest by militants, hackers and criminals of all hues.

With the cyber world actively increasing, cyber crimes are on the rise for which state police have to equip itself professionally to secure the cyber space, the chief minister added.

The cybercrime police station was among the three key new projects of state police department launched as parts of government’s programs to highlight BJP-led coalition government’s achievements in 100 days.

The government plans to launch a series of new schemes and projects in the next seven days.

Before opening the cybercrime police station, the chief minister inaugurated the office of Superintendent of Police of Traffic Police Control Wing at City Police Station and a Community Policing at the Banquet Hall of 1st Battalion, Manipur Rifles.

The main objective of launching Community Policing is to build a healthy police-community relationship, he explained.

SPs and OCs will take initiatives to create Police Community Liaison Groups (PCLG), comprising representatives of communities and police at three levels in their respective districts and police stations.

While launching the community policing, the chief minister said that “police is the mirror of the government.”

Expressing serious concern over ever increasing instances of mob justice, the chief minister asked the police department to take up necessary steps to check them.

He also directed the state police to expedite the process of investigation and charge sheet framing in the cases relating to heinous crimes.
