Willimnagar: Students of Loyola College in Williamnagar presented on September 16 the famous Broadway musical play “Annie” before an audience of music and theater lovers that included Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.

Sangma laid the foundation for the science block of the premier educational institution managed by the Jesuits of North East India. The new block will comprise a four-story building with an elevator.

“Annie” is the story of an orphan girl who cares for those around her and brings joy and happiness in others’ lives.“Every year Loyola provides its students opportunities to develop their skills in dramas and plays. This year our students present the famous 2014 Broadway musical play, “Annie”,” said Principal of Loyola College, Jesuit Father Sunny Augustine, while speaking to The Shillong Times. He added that Loyola College chose to present “Annie” for its moral content.

“There are some characters unkind and dishonest. But their personalities are outweighed by the shining examples of the good people in the play. Annie shows devotion to her parents and exhibits hope in difficult situations. Despite her own misfortune, she cares for her friends in the orphanage and for creatures who are suffering,” said Fr Sunny Augustine.

In the famous Broadway musical film of 2014, Annie is a heart-warming tale of an adventurous orphan girl who had to live in a miserable orphanage run by the tyrannical Hannigan.

Annie’s seemingly hopeless situation changes when she is selected to spend Christmas with the billionaire, Mr. Oliver Warbucks. Annie quickly wins the admiration of Mr. Warbucks and turns his mansion into a home full of fun and happiness.

The film has incorporated notable songs from the original Broadway production and the musical’s most iconic songs “Tomorrow” and “It’s the Hard Knock Life” are going to be presented by the Loyola students, reported The Shillongtimes.

East Garo Hills district, long neglected in the education sector, was given a major boost by the missionaries when the Jesuit Priests of North East India decided to set up their first Loyola school and college in Williamnagar in 2010. Affiliated to North Eastern Hill University. Loyola Higher Secondary School, the forerunner of the College, was established in 2010 and the degree programs began three years later in 2013.

At present the college offers courses in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Commerce. It is also the first and only college certified for use of clean and green energy with its classrooms solar powered.

With the introduction of semester system in the undergraduate level in the University in 2015, Loyola started offering B.A. honours in Economics, English, Education, History, Garo and Political Science and B.Com.

Loyola is getting ready to start Science courses from 2018. The Science Block under construction has three science laboratories, one computer laboratory and an audio-visual room.
