Imphal: The Excise Department of the Manipur government has destroyed liquor worth 2 million rupees ahead of the local body elections in the northeastern Indian state.

The panchayat election is scheduled for October 7.

I Jatishwor, an officer, told reporters that the revenue department had collected 36.6 million rupees from three excise circles of his department from April to August.

The seized liquor, including locally brewed, was destroyed at the same place, he added. The 1,074 seized bottles included both Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and indigenously distilled country liquor, the officer explained, reports the northeasttoday.com.

He said they have destroyed more than 3,000 liters of IMFL and 1,000 liters of distilled indigenous country liquor.

The department has formed 20 special enforcement teams for safety and security for the coming panchayat election.

Each team is led by two police inspectors and drives have been conducted at various places where panchayat elections are to be held, he added.

Jatishwor appealed to the police department to co-operate and asked people to support during the drives.
