Amid opposition by some Catholic leaders to a proposed Muslim burial ground near Margao town in the state, the Goa Church Saturday asked its followers to respect the basic rights of every community.

Diocesan Centre for Social Communications, an arm of the Goa Church, issued a statement Saturday, saying disposal of dead bodies is a basic right, therefore creation of a burial ground should not be opposed.

“It has been observed that when there are attempts to purchase land or even find a site for a kabrasthan, there are often objections from some sections of the Catholic community who are opposed to Muslim cemetery,” said Father Olavo Caiado, Director of the Centre.

“Disposal of dead bodies is a basic right of every religious community including Muslims,” he said, and appealed Catholics to facilitate setting up of Muslim burial ground near Margao in South Goa district.
