Yangon: Sister Sudha Varghese, an Indian nun, will speak on self-emptying at the Asia Mission Conference organized by Christian Conference of Asia (CCA).

“I am happy to share my thoughts and experiences of working with the poor in this august gathering,” Sr. Varghese, a member of the Patna province of Sisters of Notre Dame, told Matters India.

She is scheduled to address the conference on October 13. Her topic is “Journeying Together: Mission as Affirming the Servanthood.” She has been working among Bihar’s Musahar, one of the lowest Dalit groups.

“When we were screening who to invite for as a speaker for AMC, there were many names suggested. A Pakistani delegate, who was part of the team to screen speakers, suggested Sr. Varghese’s name. The Pakistan delegate even showed a short video about her and work from YouTube to the screening committee and all approved her to be one of the speakers,” CCA general secretary Reverend Mathews George Chunakara said.

It is a great joy to have a Catholic nun speaking to different Protestant and other church delegates across the world gathered here, he added.

More than 600 delegates from different parts of the globe are attending the AMC that began on October 12 in the former capital of Buddhist-majority Myanmar to discuss the theme “Journeying together: Prophetic witness to the truth and light in Asia.”

The present conference is the fourth of its kind since CCA was founded in 1957. It brings together churches, faith-based organizations and partners to reflect upon the mission in an Asian context.

The Myanmar Council of Churches and Myanmar Baptist Convention, both CCA members, are hosting the event.
