Brussel: SIGNIS, the World Catholic Association for Communication, reaffirmed its commitment to truth in supporting Pope Francis’ theme for the 52nd World Communications Day.
The Holy See’s Secretariat for Communication announced the theme for World Communications Day, set for May 13, 2018 as “’The truth will set you free’ (Jn 8:32): Fake news and journalism for peace.”
“In communion with Pope Francis, SIGNIS reaffirms a commitment that should guide all Catholic communicators: To recognize and spread the truth,” said Helen Osman, president of SIGNIS.
In conjunction with World Communications Day 2018, SIGNIS will encourage its members, through their daily work in the media and in international forums, to prioritize efforts to counteract disinformation and the lack of commitment to the truth.
“This requires a deep effort of discernment, media literacy and a review of communication ethics,” Osman said. “It also involves research and reflection on the signs of a ‘post-truth era’ and invites us to search for the best strategies to counteract ‘fake news’ and propaganda. As in the extraordinary stories of the Gospel, we have the option of constructing a narrative of hope based on the forcefulness of the truth.”
The 100 SIGNIS member associations, located around the world in five continents, are encouraged to consider projects and programs focusing on the theme.
