New Delhi: Cardinal George Alencherry, head of the Syro-Malabar Church, on December 8 underwent surgery to remove blocks in heart, a message from top official of the Oriental rite says.

Archiepiscopal Chancellor Father Antony Kollannur said in a message the cardinal was admitted in Lisie Hospital in Kochi two days ago with complaints of excessive cough and fever. “During the examination, the doctors found some variations in his ECG and this morning angiogram was conducted on him,” the senior priest said.

The doctors discovered two blocks, one major and the other minor. “After some consultation among the doctors, angioplasty was done some hours back. Two stents were inserted,” Father Kollannur said in the message sent to bishops.

The priest also said the surgery was successful and the cardinal is resting in the hospital.

The doctors have banned visitors and phone calls to prevent infection and further cough that could delay the 72-year-old cardinal’s speedy recovery.

“Your prayers are requested for the speedy recovery of our beloved Major Archbishop,” the message said.
