Pope declares new feast day devoted to the Virgin Mary

Vatican City — Pope Francis has made the devotion to the Virgin Mary a new fixed celebration in the Roman Catholic calendar.

The Vatican published a decree Saturday in which Francis declared that the Mary “Mother of the Church” feast would be celebrated on the Monday following Pentecost. This year, it falls on May 21.

The decree said Francis wanted the devotion to “encourage the growth of the maternal sense of the Church in the pastors, religious and faithful, as well as a growth of genuine Marian piety.”

History’s first Latin American pope is particularly devoted to Marian piety and frequently refers to the church as “mother.”

In 2016, Francis set another feast day for another key woman in Christ’s life, declaring July 22 as the feast of St. Mary Magdalene.

  1. FANTASTIC Pope Francis! Witis, u place Mary, where she RIGHTLY belongs :ATHE ART of the Church :Lumen Gentium

  2. I have great personal devotion to Mary the Mother of Jesus, and pray the rosary everyday. But I don’t see the need of one more Marian feast. How does it help? There is too much of cultic pious devotion and too little of real spirituality.

There is also no doubt that the Dogmatic Constitution of the Church does refer to the Church as Mother, among several other definitions (cf LG No 6). However, this reduces the people of God to children. We need more emphasis on an adult church, too difficult to explain here.

George Nedumparambil’s comments may not be compatible with classic Catholic teachings, but it does not give Tom Abhisheka the licence to allege that the man is possessed by the devil. It’s also inappropriate to label Martin Luther as a modern day curse. Many good things came out of the Reformation. Let us appreciate them, especially a renewed love for Sacred Scripture

  3. A new Feast is not at all necessary. There are ever so many Feasts related to Mary. Promoting the feminine dimension of the Church is laudable. Will a new feast do the job?

  4. Another feast on honor of Mary our Mother. Welcome. It is not going to take anything away from Jesus Christ. He is supreme.
    After Pentecost is very logical.
Thanks dear Pope. We shall continue to adore and worship our Lord Jesus in the Father and the Holy Spirit.

  5. Mother concept…whips up sentiments to all humans…birth on earth…and initial care of nature.
