Dubai: Among the successful candidates of the Union Public Service Commission examination this year included a boy who did his schooling in the emirate of Sharjah and became a medical doctor in India.
25-year-old Dr Melvyn Varghese who secured the 292nd rank in his maiden attempt is very happy. Melvyn studied at the Emirates National School in Sharjah before coming back to India for higher studies.
Dr Varghese is expecting to join either the Indian Police Service (IPS) or the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) soon. “But as my goal was joining the IAS, I will make another attempt and appear for the UPSC exam next year too,” he said.
It is rare for an NRI student to contemplate a career in the civil services in India. “It is because NRI children don’t get such orientation and environment,” he added.
For Dr Varghese, the initial inspiration came from his father Shibu Verghese, head of a pharmaceutical company in Dubai, but it was the exposure to the dire conditions in the government hospital in Mysuru in Karnataka state during his house surgency that motivated him to do something for society.
Varghese, who finished his MBBS from Government Medical College Mysore in 2016, was moved when he compared his own comfortable childhood with the condition of many people in India. “It was the contrast between the developed Gulf and the poor state of affairs in India, especially in the government hospitals, that prompted me to do something about it.”
“I feel very passionate about sectors like health, education and sanitation. My passion is to work with the people. IRS and IPS are also good services to work with the people and bring about a change in society,” said Varghese, whose family hails from Chengannur in Kerala.
