Chilean bishops offer mass resignation to Pope Francis

Vatican City: All 34 Chilean bishops who attended a crisis meeting this week with Pope Francis about the cover-up of sexual abuse in their country have offered to resign, the bishops said in a statement released on May 18.

It was not immediately clear if the pope would accept all or any of the resignations.

“We have put our positions in the hands of the Holy Father and will leave it to him to decide freely for each of us,” the bishops said in their statement, in which they also apologized to Chile, the victims of abuse and the pope for the scandal.

The scandal has devastated the credibility of the Church in the once staunchly Catholic country. It has also hurt the pope’s own image because this year he strongly defended a bishop accused in the alleged cover-up before reversing his position.

  1. This resignation offer of the Chilean bishops could be read two ways.

    1. It may be a genuine offer of attrition and should be dealt with accordingly.
    2. It could be a pressure tactic, to make the Pope take a soft stand. Resignations are often used as a coercive act. It is hard for me to believe that these bishops, who till the other day were turning a blind eye to clerical pedophilia will suddenly turn over a new leaf and humbly bow down before the Pope.

Besides, resignations do not wash away culpability. If a bishop has been aiding or abetting a crime, or covering it up, then it is a criminal act, and such persons should face the due process of the law of the land.

It is also time in India for bishops and priests to be fully accountable to both the people and the law of the land.

Some years ago Bp Willie Gomes of Pune had to resign because he had a mistress. More recently Bp Isidore Fernandes of Allahabad had to resign for illegally ordaining a Protestant bishop. As per provisions of Canon Law he should actually have incurred a latae sententia ex-communication.
