Tura: The use of social media to post fake news and pictures defaming individuals and organizations don’t appear to be limited to mainland India alone with similar posts doing the rounds in Garo Hills as well.
The latest to fall victim to fake news is the premier institution-Don Bosco Skill Development Centre headquartered in Mendal, North Garo Hills.
The Don Bosco Skill Development Centre (DBSDC) on July 25 lodged a police case against an individual going by the name of Chisak Marak who put up unruly posts on social media targeting the premier institution.
The accused, in his social media posts, has alleged that a woman, who was helped by the institution, had fallen victim of the flesh trade in southern India.
The posts were reportedly made on Facebook through various social media groups created by some people under the tags ‘The Times of Garo Hills’, The All Garo Hills Times Now and another ‘The All Garo Hills Times Now’ on July 18 which showed photos of the woman in compromising ways that were allegedly posted by the woman herself.
The photos were later deleted by the user though the posts continued on the group pages.
Shocked at the name of their institution being dragged into controversy, the director of DBSDC registered an FIR at the Bajengdoba police station in North Garo Hills seeking stringent action against those for maligning the image of the institution.
“As per the post, the allegation leveled is that the DB Technical Society is involved in human trafficking which is baseless and tends to demoralize the renowned institution,” stated the FIR filed today by the director of the institute at New Mendal.
The use of fake profiles for spreading rumours as well as defamatory posts has been on the rise in the region dragging innocent people into public scrutiny.
