Kochi, Dec 7: The Syro Malabar church synod will begin at the Mount St Thomas Church in Kakkanad on Jan 7. Syro Malabar church cardinal Mar George Alancherry will preside over the synod. The beginning prayers ahead of the synod will be led by Bishop Mar Jacob Muricken, auxiliary bishop of Pala diocese.

All bishops under the Syro Malabar church will attend the two-week long synod, which will conclude on January 18. It is learned that the synod will discuss recent issues like Sabarimala women’s entry, action against Fr Augustine Vattoly, nun rape case in which Bishop Franco  Mulakkal was involved and controversial land deal by Ernakulam-Angamali archdiocese. Meanwhile, the priests belonging to Ernakulam-Angamali archdiocese  expect the synod would elect a new administrative archbishop to the archdiocese, said church sources.

“We hope the synod will appoint the archbishop. Any bishop under the age of 75 is eligible to be selected as administrative archbishop,” said a senior priest belonging to the Ernakulam-Angamali archdiocese.
