Jagadalpur, June 27, 2019: A Catholic nun died and five others, including a bishop, were injured in a road accident June 27 evening in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh.

Sister Jaise, a member of the Deena Bandhu Samaj, an indigenous congregation, died on the way to the hospital, Carmelite of Mary Immaculate Father Thomas Kollikolavil told Matters India.

The injured were rushed to a Catholic Church managed Mar Paulinus Memorial Hospital at Jagdalpur where their condition is reportedly stable.

Carmelite Bishop Joseph Kollamparampil of Jagdalpur, who sustained head injuries, is under special observation and is stated to be out of danger.

The other injured are Carmelite Father Thomas Vadakkumkara, Deen Bandhu Samaj Sisters Sumera and Alphonsa and their driver Dayaram. Their condition is reportedly stable.

The accident occurred at around 6 pm on the outskirts of Jagdalpur, headquarters of the Maoist-infested Bastar district.

The accident took place when the bishop’s car skidded off the road and hit a tree hardly 15 km from Jagdalpur, Father Kollikolavil said.

They were on their way back to Jagdalpur after blessing a hostel for tribal children at Deen Bandhu Samaj convent campus at Gangalore, one of the highly Maoist-affected areas in Bijapur district in the state.

Father Kollikolavil said the heavy rains had made the road highly slippery.
