Malappuram, July 26, 2019: A bus conductor in Kerala was ordered to serve as a caretaker in a government children’s home for ten days as punishment for ill-treating a student.

The driver and the conductor of the bus plying in Vazhikadavu-Parapanangadi route in Malappuram district ignored a student passenger’s request to board the bus at a bus stop. The duo also turned ignored other passengers’ demand to stop the bus for the student.

The issue was picked up by state Education Minister K T Jaleel after a passenger of the same bus posted details of the incident on Facebook. The minister then directed the district collector to take action against the bus conductor and his assistants.

The conducter, identified as Saheer Khan, has been issued an order to serve.

Police took the driver and the conductor into custody on July 24 and the bus was seized by the motor vehicle department of Kerala. On the same day, district collector Jafar Malik issued an order, asking the conductor to work as a caretaker in a government children’s home at Thavanur.

“I am hopeful that the conductor who has been punished would be transformed as a person who will understand and love children, after his service at children’s home,” the collector told reporters.

The conductor will be allowed to resume his job only after he produces a certificate stating that he has successfully completed his work at the children’s home, Malik said.
