Kalpetta, Aug 21: The Vellamunda police have registered a case against a senior priest and five nuns on the charge of defaming Sister Lucy Kalappura, who was expelled by the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) early this month .

The police registered the case on Aug 21 after St. Lucy filed a complaint with the district police chief against six persons, including Fr. Noble Parakkal, a member of the Syro-Malabar diocese of Mananthavady and five nuns of the FCC.

Sr. Lucy said in her complaint that the accused had portrayed through social media her interactions with journalists as a salacious affair.

The case was registered under Section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal code, M.A. Santhosh, Circle Inspector of Police, Vellamunda, said.

The police had registered a case against the authorities of the FCC convent at Karakkamala near Vellamunda in the district, following a complaint of illegal confinement by St. Lucy a few days ago.

“We will take a detailed statement from St. Lucy in the evening, after which statements of the accused will be recorded,” Mr.Santhosh said.

Sr. Lucy, who took part in a protest against former Bishop of Jalandhar, Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun, was expelled by the FCC early this month for “failing to give a satisfactory explanation for her lifestyle in violation of the proper law of the FCC”. The congregation had earlier accused her of publishing poems, purchasing a car and taking part in a protest against Bishop Mulakkal.

A few days ago, Sr. Kalappura had said the congregation could not ask her to leave the convent on legal grounds since she had filed an appeal challenging its decision.
