Former Chikmagalur bishop dies

Bengaluru, October 10, 2019: Former Bishop John Baptist Sequeira of Chikmagalur died on October 9 due to old age ailments.

The end came at the Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor, Hosur Road, Bengaluru. He was 89.

The funeral Service will be held at 3 pm on October 11 at the Home for the Aged (Little Sisters of the Poor) in Bengaluru. Thereafter, the burial will take place at St. Patrick’s Parish Cemetery on Hosur Road.

Bishop Sequeira was born on July 23, 1930, and ordained a priest on April 15, 1958. He was appointed the second bishop of Chikmagalur on January 26, 1987 at the age of 56.

He had earlier served as professor and rector of St. Peter’s Pontifical Seminary, Bangalore. Having attained the superannuation, he retired on December 2, 2006 at the age of 76. He was a priest for 61 years and a bishop for 32 years.

Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore, who heads the Catholic Church in Karnataka, condoled the death. He shared his sorrow with Bishop T. Anthony Swamy of Chikmagalur and priests, religious and lay faithful of the diocese.
