New Delhi, October 31, 209: A Catholic priest was granted bail two weeks after he was sent to judicial custody in connection with the death of a hosteler.

The Chief Judicial Magistrate of Unakoti district of North Tripura on October 30 granted bail to Holy Cross Father Lancy D’Souza, in-charge of St Paul’s Boys’ Hostel in Kumarghat, around 135 km northeast of Agartala, the state capital.

The hostel is attached to the St Paul’s Parish where Father D’Souza is the pastor.

The court will consider the bail plea of Bulchung Halam, the hostel warden who was jailed along with the priest, on November 14.

The Catholic layman was accused of beating the boy, Happy Debbarma, a ninth grader who died in a hospital on October 6 while he was at home on Puja vacation.

The two were arrested on October 15. Father D’Souza was accused of not taking action against the warden.
