Ranchi, Nov. 6, 2019: A mob in Jharkhand, eastern India, lynched two laborers accusing them of stealing batteries. One of them succumbed to injuries and the other was admitted to hospital in a serious condition.

While Mubarak Ansari succumbed to injuries, his companion Akhter Ansari has been admitted to a hospital with severe injuries.

The incident occurred on November 5 night in the Govindpur town of Dhanbad district.

Sub-divisional police officer Bermo Anjani Anjan said preliminary investigation suggested that the mob caught the two while they were allegedly trying to steal the battery from a truck. The truck driver saw them and immediately shouted for help. A group of people gathered at the spot and started thrashing the two youths, the police said.

The police officer said that the two were allegedly involved in a similar theft a week ago.

Narrating the incident Anjan said, “More people were called in from the Govindpur town and the two were brutally beaten up for hours. We regularly conduct campaigns, meetings with people asking them to not take law into their own hands whatever the situation is. They should have called us or they should have brought him to the police station. It is merely five kilometers away from the site of the beating,”.

The accused in the case are being rounded up while the body has been sent for post-mortem.

Jharkhand has reported a few lynching case in the past year.

In June, Tabrez Ansari was brutally thrashed by a mob on charges of stealing a bike. Tabrez died after a few days of the lynching incident.
