UNGLI

Known for the screenplay/dialogues of such successful films as RANG DE BASANTI, STUDENT OF THE YEAR, etc. Rensil D’Silva’s debut directorial film under the premier production house, Dharma Productions, KURBAAN, failed to set the cash registers ringing but the music by Salim-Sulaiman proved to be chartbusting. So one has good expectations from his next, UNGLI, produced once again by the Dharma Productions and starring music’s lucky mascot Emraan Hashmi and ‘queen’ Kangana Ranaut. Music is helmed by a host of composer-Salim-Sulaiman, Gulraj Singh, Sachin-Jigar and Aslam Keyi. So let’s check out their joint offering!

It’s an all out Gulraj Singh show with the composer also doubling up as the singer for the romantic ditty, ‘Pakeezah‘. The tune and minimalistic guitar based arrangements are nice and so are the simple (Urdu and Hindi) and easy to hum lyrics. But the classy song may not exactly have the mass appeal of the usual Emraan Hashmi chartbusters.
Viru (Dharam pa ji) might have admonished his love, Basanti, for dancing (in SHOLAY) but here she is urged to burn the dance floor in ‘Dance Basanti‘! But the tune that Sachin-Jigar choose is not dance friendly and the only highlight is the superb rendition by Vishal Dadlani with good support by Anushka Manchanda. Even the presence of a glamorous Shraddha Kapoor (along with Emraan Hashmi) in the promotional video has failed to help matters much.

Gulraj Singh comes back with a situational theme or title track, ‘Aadarniya Ungli’ that conjures up the theme of the film. A dark humour/satirical take on the corrupt system present in the offices and society. Although yet again it is just Vishal Dadlani, whose rock star rendition remains etched in memory, even after the very average song fades away.

Salim-Sulaiman’s ‘Aulia’ is a prayer to the almighty to show the right path in troubled times and has been rendered well by Armaan Malik. The song has traces of Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Noor-E-Khuda’ (MY NAME IS KHAN) in the chorus and ‘Tu Hi Tu Har Jagah’ (KICK) in the antaras and so sounds heard before.

Last up, Aslam Keyi’s ‘Ungli Pe Nachalein‘, is the probable chartbuster that one was looking for in the album, and it is the rhythm that helps the cause. Dev Negi and Shipra Goyal render the number with ease & elan. A few dialogues from the movie and the main one that classifies the spirit of UNGLI, ‘Agar seedhi aur tedhi ungli se ghee na nikle toh…‘, finds place here.

Summing up, the audio of UNGLI fails to live up to the expectations, keeping in mind that this is a Dharma Production-Emraan Hashmi venture, both known to carry some heavy duty musical expectation(s). ‘Ungli Pe Nachalein‘ is our only chart topping pick, while ‘Pakeezah‘ will appeal to the discerning music aficionados. However, the star studded venture, which has been heavily promoted can hope for some decent initial when the film releases all over on 28th November.
