Bhubaneswar: Lack of proper management is the root cause of illiteracy, poor primary healthcare and lack of access to basic amenities in India, says Odisha Governor S.C. Jamir.

“Why is it that a nation of more than a billion despite being endowed with so many natural resources of substantial quantities lags behind in economic growth” asked Jamir while addressing the first convocation of Xavier University Bhubaneswar (XUB) and 24th convocation of the Xavier institute of Management Bhubaneswar (XIMB) on March 27 at XIMB premises.

“While we are able to spend spacecrafts to Mars, we cannot take literacy, primary healthcare and access to basic amenities to the masses. I think what we lack is proper management. I mean management of materials, natural resources and human resources,” the governor added.

“We have to mange one billion strong populations so that they become an asset for the nation and not its liability. This is the greatest challenge before the nation and it is also before our management professionals to ensure both economic development and social development,” the governor continued.

Jamir said it was a widely accepted fact that the economic development of a nation should nurture and further social development. Social development, in turn sustains economic development.”

India faces many inter-regional and intra-regional disparities in terms of socio-economic development. Unless society as a whole is equitably developed and can both support and sustain economic growth, the country cannot achieve all-round development, the governor told the 403 graduating students.

The students were from Doctoral-level Fellow Programme in Management, Masters in Business Administration, Masters in Human Resource Management and Masters in Rural Management and Post-graduate Diploma in Management.

Jamir presented medals to meritorious students followed by the presentation of graduates of various courses by the respective Deans.
