Kolkata – Six days after 71-year-old nun was allegedly raped at a convent at Ranaghat in Nadia, she was discharged from the hospital in the wee hours Friday and left for an “undisclosed destination” outside West Bengal, even as investigators are yet to make any arrests in the case.

The elderly nun had “expressed her willingness” to leave West Bengal “to overcome trauma” and for “working with a free mind” in future, said a source at the convent.

“At around 2.20 am, the Sub-Divisional Officer and the Sub-Divisional Police Officer alongwith the convent authorities came and gave a written plea that they want the patient to be released. We checked the vital parameters of the patient before discharging her. She is physically and mentally fit now,” said A N Mondal, superintendent of Ranaghat sub-divisional hospital where the nun was admitted to on March 14.

Mondal said the officials took to nun to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata, over 64 km away, from where she took an early morning flight for an undisclosed destination.

A doctor on duty accompanied her to the airport, he said, adding that the nun has been prescribed medicines for 10 days after which she has been advised to consult a gynaecologist and a psychiatrist, reported Indian Express.

Sources at the convent said, the nun had asked her relatives not to come to meet her either at the hospital or at the airport.

Archbishop of Kolkata Thomas D’Souza, who had visited the spot following the incident, said the nun must have left to take rest. “I haven’t spoken to her after that so I do not know why she left. But I think she needs rest after the trauma,” he said.

The West Bengal government had on March 18 decided to hand over the case to CBI after the state police’s CID failed to make any breakthrough in the case. The investigation agency is yet to formally take charge of the case.
