Allahabad – An advocate was shot dead by a sub-inspector inside a district court premises in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday following which lawyers went on the rampage, hurling stones at police and administrative officials and resorting to vandalism.
The incident took place at around 2pm, police spokesperson Mrityunjay Mishra said.
According to reports, sub-inspector Shailendra Singh had brought a criminal to the district court for a hearing when he had an altercation with some lawyers, reported Hindustantimes.
This reportedly led to lawyers manhandling and attacking the police offcer who then opened fire with his service weapon at lawyer Nabi Ahmad, a resident of Haldi village of Karchana, from close range. Another lawyer also is said to have sustained gunshot injuries to his foot in the incident.
Mishra did not confirm the identity of the attacker, though eyewitnesses claimed the assailant was Singh with whom the injured advocate was said to have “a long-standing tiff”.
Heavy deployment of police force is in place around the district court premises, which falls under Colonelganj Police Station, while senior officials have rushed to the spot to defuse the situation, he said. Further details are awaited.
