Gaya: A renowned doctor of Gaya, Bihar, who was allegedly kidnapped along with his wife, made a dramatic appearance on Wednesday.
Dr Pankaj Gupta and Shobhra appeared in Sobhra’s maternal home after arriving by a train from New Delhi bound for Howrah.
With the couple’s arrival, the six day long drama ended but the suspense remained as the full story is yet to unfold and may never come out, The Times of India reported. The couple gave different versions of their release to two senior police officers.
The kidnap victims told Magadh Range DIG PK Srivastava that the kidnapper release them Tuesday evening near the Lucknow Railway station. The DIG said that the couple was released on account of pressure mounted by the Bihar police team along with their counterparts in Uttar Pradesh. Getting hint of the imminent crack down, the kidnappers managed to sneak out of the 9th floor flat of a posh apartment in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh.
The couple told the DIG that all through their captivity they were kept under heavy sedation and on account of continuous sedation they did not recall the details of their journey from Lucknow and they just somehow managed to reach Gaya, sleeping most of the time in the train.
A statement from the couple said the kidnappers expressed regret over abducting a woman since kidnapping women went against their principles. They relased the couple as a mark of respect for women.
However, Lucknow is not on the route of the train they traveled. One has to go either to Varanasi or Kanpur to get the Howrah bound train.
The couple had a different narrative for Senior Superintendent of Police Manu Maharaj. Gupta told him that he was released at Dehri-on Sone Railway station on Wednesday morning from where they got the Poorva Express. The couple also told the SSP that they were not subjected to cruelty during captivity.
Meanwhile the Gaya chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) expressed happiness over the return of Gupta and his wife. IMA secretary Dr Umesh Verma said that the very fact that the couple came back home safely was important and other details associated with the release and the role of different agencies were of little significance. The IMA secretary thanked different organizations for showing solidarity with doctor and his wife in their hour of crisis.
