Dimapur: A village in Nagaland has set an example by deciding not to pay taxes to underground groups operating in the northeastern Indian state.
The top council of Shokhuvi village recently resolved that it would not allow any individual or group belonging to any of the Naga National factions to carry out their activities in the village jurisdiction. It would not allow the groups to collect taxes from people and business establishments in the village.
In a press release, Shokhuvi Totimi Hoho (women’s meet) president V. Sumiholi Swu and general secretary Vihoni Murru said the meeting resolved to ask persons and groups involved in such activities to leave the village. The union said it would take serious action against the defaulters, reported The Nagaland Post.
The Hoho said the meeting was held to discuss various activities and taxations carried out by the groups in the village causing inconvenience to the public. The council has received numerous complaints from all sections of people, the press release said.
Law enforcement authority has also served warnings to the village on several occasions. The Hoho said the meeting was held on June 23 with prior knowledge of the village authority at the village council hall and was attended by Shokhuvi Students Union, Shokhuvi Totimi Council and representatives from various Naga National groups.
