knowledge on the subject. Team after team answered questions and repeated practically verbatim certain verses of Acts. This was the eleventh annual quiz program. Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore, who addressed the participants, encouraged them to follow the advice of Pope Francis in protecting the environment and the earth. He also asked them questions on The Acts of the Apostles and encouraged them to read Scripture and become proud of their Christian upbringing. The archbishop reminded them that the Church is observing the Year dedicated to the Consecrated life and family now. The program was conducted by the Catholic Club and its president Alton Viegas distributed the prizes. Each participant was awarded a participation certificate and a book entitled “131 Fundamental facts for Catholic Kids.” The participants were given an introduction to the Serra movement which comprises lay Catholics who promote, nurture and encourage vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life. A film “Leave your boats and follow me” was screened at the program. A priest and a nun shared with the participants how they experienced God’s call to dedicate their lives for others. Serra is an international organization named after Blessed Junipero Serra, an 18th century Franciscan Friar who worked in the US West Coast. He established missions in California and Mexico. Pope John Paul II beatified him on September 25, 1988. The first Serra Club was formed in Seattle, US, by a group of lay Catholics in 1935 and Serra International was founded in 1947 with its headquarters in Chicago, another city in the United States. The first Serra Club in India was set up in Bangalore. It is a lay Catholic organization that fosters and promotes vocations to the priesthood and religious life while encouraging its members to fulfill their Christian vocations to service. The Serra Club of Bangalore started in 2002 after a local Catholic Collin Timms met Neo Mendes, the then president of the Serra Club of Bangladesh who introduced the concept of ‘Serra and its far-reaching effects.’ Timms saw the opportunity to bring this international Catholic lay movement to India, and his enthusiasm impressed Mendes who informed the Serran Trustee for Asia, Chainarong Monthienvichienchai about the possibility of starting a Serra Club in India.
