New Delhi : A police officer told a woman in Delhi that “trying to kiss is not molestation” and he can’t take down her complaint, alleges a Facebook post that has gone viral.

Thousands of people shared Radhika P Singh’s post on Monday in which she described her unnamed friend’s ordeal at Connaught Place, the heart of the national capital and supposedly one of the safest places in the city. Singh said her “friend was walking down M block, Connaught Place, when a gentleman came and tried kissing her in broad daylight” on Sunday.

When the woman screamed for help, people caught hold of the man and the police were called in. The post says calling the police was a “mistake”.

“The worst mistake was to call the cops–they came 40 minutes after calling (she held onto him for that long) and the first thing the cops did was to take him inside his van and talk to him (now I know what they had discussed!). The cops came out and asked my friend to write an application to the SHO Connaught place police station explaining what really happened to her,” wrote Singh.

Shockingly, a sub inspector at the spot rejected the woman’s application thrice. “According to him just trying to kiss a girl is NOT molestation!!!!!!!!! (sic). So he rejected our application for the 3rd time. The sub inspector tried to scare us by saying that we will have to come to the police station, and then come to the court tomorrow in front of the Magistrate and then finally my friend should be calling her parents or relatives.’

Singh, while responding to comments on her post, alleged the police called the detained man’s parents. The man’s parents allegedly called the victim back and claimed that “their son was suffering from depression”.

Hindustan Times called the sub-inspector five times for his comment: The first time he said he was “busy” and then later cut us off.

Singh later removed her Facebook post because she wanted to “get on with her life” but by then it had got over 8,000 likes and around 5,000 shares.

“Thanks guys for all the support pouring our way – unfortunately we cant (sic) raise our voice without thinking of the consequences. We are simple people try)ing (sic) to live our lives peacefully – and get frustrated like many of you out there. I am expecting NO change out of this post. This was my way of expressing my anger. And like many of you, I will also move on with my life…. and try and forget this incident,” she said in a comment.
