Kolkata: Missionaries of Charity houses throughout the world observed the 105th birth anniversary of Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata on Wednesday with prayers and thanksgiving.
At the headquarters of Missionaries of Charity, popularly known as the Mother House, in Kolkata, eastern India, the nuns started the day with special prayers in the memory of the saintly nun as hundreds of people flocked to her tomb to pay their respects.
Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910 at Skopje in Macedonia. She died on September 5, 1997, in Kolkata, the base of her global mission to the poorest of the poor.
Mother Teresa was the recipient of numerous honors including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize and the Bharat Ratna (Jewel of India), India’s highest civilian award, in 1980. In 2003, she was beatified as “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta.”
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee tweeted: “Live simply so that others may simply live” – Remembering Mother Teresa on her 105th birthday.
