Guwahati: Vice chancellor of an Assam university has urged visual communication students to use photography for social change.
“Photography can act as a medium for change. It is a strong voice of the people. Photography exhibitions can create awareness among various sections of society,” said Dhrubajyoti Saikia, vice chancellor of Cotton College State University.
He made this comments while opening the “Imageind-2015,” a photography exhibition and workshop at the Don Bosco School, Guwahati on August 21.
The Department of Mass Communication, Assam Don Bosco University, Azara, organized the exhibition for a cause in association with Sony India and Mediahype.
The three-day event that opened on August 21 comprised national open photography competition, exhibition and workshop open to all.
The nationwide competition was open to both photography enthusiasts and professionals.
“The nationwide response to the first photography competition was phenomenal,” said Imageind chairperson Salesian Father C.M. Paul explaining the three categories of the competition — environment pollution, women and children, and livelihoods.
Robi Augustine who coordinated Imageind competition said they had “huge response of photo contribution for two categories, namely women and children, and livelihood.”
The exhibition consists of seven panels containing 58 photographs shortlisted by selection jury from some 200 entries which came from all over India.
The competition received total 200 entries and the organizers selected 58 photographs for final exhibition.
Some 50 participants took part in the photography workshop conducted by Sony alpha-pro specialist from New Delhi Saroj Kumar Dora and Anirban Brahma from Sony Kolkata.
The results of the competition will be declared on August 23 and the prizes would be distributed at 5 pm on the same day.
