New Delhi: The Delhi Government has ordered for some 400,000 condoms to distribute in the main red light area of the national capital.
The move came after reports indicated short supply of condoms at Garstin Bastion Road, now renamed as Swami Shradhanand Marg, that connects the New and Old Delhi railway stations.
The Delhi Government will make these condoms available at its dispensary at Ajmeri Gate.
Health Minister Satyendra Jain gave the order on Wednesday after a meeting with Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal at the Delhi secretariat, The Hindustan Times reported.
The DCW chief had sought a detailed report from the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) following reports of lack in supply of condoms at GB road.
She wanted to know the reasons and asked the organization to resume the supply on an urgent basis. Maliwal said about 5,000 women and hundreds of men at G B Road are at a high risk of contracting HIV. Many may have already fallen prey to the virus because of the shortage of condoms.
The Delhi State Aids Control Society was supposed to receive 1.2 million free condoms a month under the fourth phase of National AIDS Control Program.
