Jaipur: Noted Rajasthani social activist Gurcharan Chabbra, who was on an indefinite hunger strike demanding liquor ban and strengthening of Lokayukta in the state, died at a hospital in Jaipur on November 3.

On a fast for 32 days, the 67-year-old former legislator died at 4:30 am, Additional Superintendent of SMS Hospital, Ajit Singh said. He was in a coma for the past couple of days and put on ventilator support, Mr Singh said.

Besides prohibition, Mr Chabbra had demanded that the Lokayukta or the state ombudsman should also have within its purview all the ministers including chief minister and senior bureaucrats, NDTV reported.

Protests greeted ministers from the Vasundhara Raje government Rajendra Rathore and Arun Chaturvedi as they turned up at the funeral.

In a statement in Jaipur, former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot said the anti-liquor crusader died due to the “insensitive” attitude of the Rajasthan government.

“Had Rajasthan Chief Minister tried to meet him and persuaded him to end fast, Chabbra might have been saved,” Mr Gehlot said.

Rajasthan Medical and Health Minister, Rajendra Rathore visited the hospital and paid his condolences.
