Jamshedpur: Voluntary outfit Roshni, which has been promoting eye camps in Jamshedpur for decades, has reasons to smile.
The city unit of Marwari Yuva Manch has decided to lend a helping hand to the NGO in its campaign to boost cornea donation. The Manch will launch a campaign in March and also plans to counsel individuals to spread awareness on the issue.
“We will divide our members based on zones in the city. While pledging your eyes is the easiest job, the challenge lies in receiving a death news and counselling family members at that point of time. Here is where we can help Roshni. The target is to make corna donation a culture in the city,” said Manish Bansal, former president of Marwari Yuva Manch.
Roshni, in the past, had approached police with a request to help them facilitate cornea transplant in medico-legal cases. Although the police department assured of help, but it has not been a very successful association, reported The Telegraph.
“We do not receive death news on time which is a major hindrance. We are happy that we can get that help now so that we can look at more corneal donation for the benefit of patients in and around Jamshedpur,” said Rajnish Kumar, secretary of Roshni.
Registered with the Eye Association of India, the NGO has transplanted 15 corneas for free between April 2015 and January 18, 2016.
This has been the maximum transplantation in its history. The outfit has been working in tandem with Jamshedpur Eye Hospital to spread awareness on cornea donation since 1994.
