New Delhi: The Ministry of Human Resource and Development on Monday released a list of top 10 educational institutions in the country under the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) – a first-of-its-kind indigenous ranking framework.
As per the NIRF list for engineering institutions, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras ranks first, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur. For management studies, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore beats IIM Ahmedabad to rank number one.
Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani released the ‘India Rankings 2016’ on Monday at Vigyan Bhawan, The Hindu reported.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and University of Hyderabad, recently involved in controversies, feature in the list at number 3 and number 4. Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, ranks first in the list of best universities in the country.
The institutions were ranked under four categories – engineering, management, pharmacy and universities and colleges. Under the pharmacy category, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences ranks number one in the country.
When the rankings framework was announced in November last, architecture was added as one of the categories, but since none of the top institutions participated in the rankings, the list was not unveiled.
This is the first time an exercise of compiling rankings of various institutions has been undertaken by the Union government. An independent agency, the National Bureau of Accreditation, working with the government, was responsible for validating the data submitted by the institutions.
Ms. Irani said the Ministry hoped to continue releasing rankings each year around April first week.
