Tezpur: The body of a man with his genitals cut off was recovered by police in Assam’s Biswanath district last night. A couple, who have accused the man of attempt to rape, have been arrested for the murder.
Biswanath superintendent of police Ankur Jain said the deceased, identified as 31-year-old Krishna Bhumij, had been working as a domestic help for Sunil Kheroua and his wife Rita Orang at their house in Boralijuli village under Jingia police stationnear the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border for the past one-and-a-half years.
Rita has told the police that Bhumij tried to rape her on April 4 during the day. As she resisted him, her cries brought her husband, who was home at that time, running to the spot. She then hit Bhumij on the head with an axe while her husband held him. She also cut off his genitals in a fit of rage.
The police found the body, bearing marks of head injury and the genitals cut off, buried in a pit dug in a crematorium on the periphery of the village late last night. The axe and a pair of sandals were found near the pit, The Telegraph reported.
Boralijuli is 6km from Jingia police station. Jingia is about 130km from Tezpur and 300km from Guwahati.
Jain said Bhumij hailed from Santipur village in Udalguri district, where two cases were registered against him before he came to Biswanath. According to Udalguri police, two arrest warrants were issued against Bhumij about a year ago but he has been evading arrest. The police, however, did not give details of the crimes committed by Bhumij.
His family, however, appears to have been aware about his whereabouts as they came to Boralijuli when they found his phone and that of his employers switched off since April 4. When they could not contact him, they arrived at the village and visited the couple’s house. When they did not get a satisfactory answer from them about the whereabouts of Bhumij, they lodged a complaint against Khe-roua with Jingia police yesterday, following which the police started investigations leading to the recovery of the body.
The police arrested the couple last night on charges of murder. They have been charged under Sections 120 (B) (conspiracy), 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) IPC in case No. 32/16. The two were today produced in court, which remanded them in judicial custody.
