Mysore: We must all have all heard of the practice of worshiping rain deities in different parts of the world. One such story, but with a very unusual deity, is being reported from the village of Belavadi near Mysore. The farmers of this tiny village believe pleasing the Frog God will bring rains to their drought stricken farmlands.
The recent droughts have created havoc in the little community destroying their crops and livelihood. Seeing the plight of his people it was the village chief who gave orders to start the special poojas for ushering in the rain .
The frog used for the pooja is usually picked from the ponds in the village. During the ceremony, the deity- frog is tied to a special throne while the villagers pray for the rain. After this, the oldest member of the community carries the throne with the frog on his head as a procession around the village, while each villager pours a pot of water on the frogs head to please the God. The frog is released unharmed back to the pond after the rituals.
Villagers say that in previous years worshiping the Frog God have brought them rain and good luck.
